The eldest daughter of Sybil, wife to Sir Reuben Hamilton (from a previous marriage), Abigail's beauty and gentle demeanor should make her a beloved daughter and favorite of the Keep.  However, since a fever as a child that robbed her of her ability to hear, she has been relegated to troublesome duty to her mother.  At best.  When Emily's marriage to Talorc of the Sinclairs does not take place, Sybil sees the opportunity to permanently rid herself of her afflicted daughter.  She convinces the king to grant her redress and demand Talorc marry Abigail, since he refused Emily.  The Scottish king agrees and Abigail finds herself wed and traveling north with a husband who despises the English and has no idea she is deaf.  Her one hope is to be reconciled with her stepsister, Emily..
